A man has been burnt alive in a fire at a shanty in Mia Khan Nagar area of Bakalia in Chittagong city.
The deceased Nur Mohammed, 55, was a rickshaw puller by profession, hailing from Beribadh area of Dhaka, said Reza-e-Rabbi, senior station officer of Lama Bazar Fire Service Station.
Jasim Uddin, deputy assistant director (DAD) of Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters in Agrabad said the fire broke out from a mosquito coal at one room of the shanty and soon engulfed the adjacent houses at Balurmat area of Mia Khan Nagor around 12:30 am on Monday, burning six houses consisting of 60 rooms into ashes.
On information, fire fighters with three units from Lama Bazar, Nandan Kanun and Chandanpura Fire Stations extinguished the fire after three and a half hours of hectic efforts.
Nur Mohammed was tenant in the house and asleep during the incident where he got trapped during the fire, Jasim said.
The fire service officials estimated the extant of losses caused by the fire to be Tk five lakh.
