Bangladesh archers clinched the silver medal in the Asia Cup Stage 2 in the team event of the recurve bow after losing to Russia by 6-0 sets in Bangkok yesterday.
Although Bangladesh finished second best, the archers’ greatest achievement was eliminating top-ranked Chinese Taipei and Asian powerhouse India in the quarter-final and the semi-final respectively. In a closely contested tie, Bangladesh edged past Taipei by 5-4 points and the success story continued in the semis as the Bangladesh archers Sheikh Sajib, Mohammed Tamimul Islam and Mohammed Nurul Huda beat India by 5-4 points. The two closely-contested events probably squeezed the steam out of the Bangladesh archers as Russia ran away with the title with a 6-0 victory. It would be mentionable that India are ranked fifth, Russia second and Bangladesh 12th.
In the women’s event, Bangladesh bowed out in the quarter-final against Taipei, losing by 221-199 points.
Bangladesh archery contingent will return home today and the Bangladesh Olympic Association has planned a felicitation programme for the archers on their arrival at 12:30pm.
