Dhaka, Chittagong mayoral polls April 28

The Election Commission has fixed April 28 for holding the elections to bifurcated Dhaka, and Chittagong City Corporations.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad made the announcement at a press conference at his office in the capital’s Agargaon on Wednesday.

“The elections to Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation, and Chittagong City Corporation will be held on April 28,” the CEC said.

The last date of submission of nomination papers is March 29.

The nomination papers will be srcutinised on April 1 and 2 while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 9, said the CEC.

Before the Dhaka City Corporation was split on November 29, 2011, the last election of the DCC was held in April 2002. Awami League, then main opposition, did not participate, and Sadeque Hossain Khoka, then a minister of BNP government, became mayor.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has received a government gazette notification to hold election of the bifurcated Dhaka City Corporation, said Rakib.

The High Court on May 13 last year withdrew its stay order on holding the split DCC polls.
