The country’s total international bandwidth use has crossed 100 Gigabit per second (Gbps), recently with maintaining 100% growth in this sector. The use of the international bandwidth will cross 200 Gbps in the country by the end of this year, said industry experts.
At the end of last year, International Long Distance Cable (ILDC) operators in the country had submitted their bandwidth usage figures to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), which showed its total uses of around 100 Gbps (actual 91,157 Mbps).
“We have sent the figures till November and I am sure that by this time, the total use of international internet bandwidth has already crossed 100 Gbps (100,000 Mbps),” Suman Ahmed Sabbir, chief technology officer of International Internet Gateway (IIG) Fiber@Home, told the Dhaka Tribune.
Suman said: “We are observing that the industry is steadily maintaining growth by more than hundred percent during the last two years.”
“This growth will also continue in current year as well and I am sure by the year end, our international bandwidth uses will crosses 300 Gbps,” said Suman who is one of the leading expert in forecasting the bandwidth uses pattern.
Referring to his projection, Suman also informed that the industry will cross 150 Gbps landmark before June this year.
“Despite the ongoing political unrest, the demand for bandwidth is on rise,” observed Suman. Out of the total number, the lone state-owned Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd. (BSCCL) ranks the top position serving 25,111 Mbps (25 Gbps).
“It was the figure when we submitted it was but the currently actual figure has increased as total uses jumps up-to 33 Gbps while the demand still shows an increasing trend,” said Manwar Hossain, managing director of BSCCL.
1asia Alliance Communication Ltd, one of the major International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) Service Provider, mostly imports bandwidth from India and delivers 23,795 Mbps bandwidth in the domestic market. Fiber @ Home Ltd, which uses 18,046 Mbps, is holding the third position on the list, using 18,046 Mbps bandwidth as of November.
Mango Teleservices Ltd uses 10,950 Mbps bandwidth while Summit Communications Limited uses 7,846 Mbps, Novocom Ltd uses 3,855 Mbps and BD Link Com Ltd uses 1,554 Mbps bandwidth, according to the official data.
Excepting BSCCL, all other six operators are importing bandwidth from India and recently they have expressed their willingness to establish a back-up link with the BSCCL for providing the quality internet bandwidth for their customers, said a top BTRC official.
