Bangladeshi nationals in London have protested the brutal killing of scientist and blogger Avijit Roy.
The protesters staged a human chain at historic Altab Ali Park in East London under the banner of "All-Party Alliance Against Terrorism and Violence in Bangladesh" at 3pm on Monday.
Participants in the protest programme called upon all to create resistance in home and abroad against fanatics, fundamentalists and militants.
They also demanded immediate arrest of Avijit's killers and ban of politics of fundamentalism.
Expressing concern over the threat on freethinking, the protesters said the attack on Avijit was an attack on freethinking, secularism, freedom of speech and democratic values.
In the human chain, blogger Shushanto Das said: "The root of religious fanatic has been strengthened through the killing of Avijit. We are concerned over the killing and we demand highest punishment to the killers."
Avijit and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, both US citizens, came under attack on the night of February 26 at the TSC roundabout on Dhaka University campus. Avijit succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital some hours after the attack. The couple came to Dhaka on February 16.
Since arriving in Dhaka, the author, who rose to prominence with his Bangla-language blog site Mukto-mona, had been visiting the book fair every day – reportedly staying there until the end of business hours.
