Covered van driver burnt to death

A covered van driver died in an arson attack in Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj upazila yesterday.

The victim, Shipon, 35, died when the Sona Masjid land port-bound vehicle was firebombed in Kansat around 5am.

Also in front of Haripur petrol pump and at Shantir Mor area in Chapainawabganj, three trucks were torched at noon, leaving a tea seller injured.

In Noakhali, a truck was set on fire at Datterhat area at 6am and a minibus at Maijdee Natun bus stand some 30 minutes later.

Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sudharam Model police station, said the truck was bound for Chowmuhani and the minibus was heading towards Sonapur when they were set ablaze.

“Monir Hossain, helper of the minibus, was injured in the attack,” he said.

Two trucks were set alight in Joypurhat near Purana Poll Rail Ghumti on Joypurhat-Panchbibi road around 7am.

Six men forced the drivers to stop by blocking the road with logs and set the vehicles on fire.

Three hours later, shots were fired at a bus in Baniyapara area of the district, causing the passengers to get off in panic.

Four petrol bombs were thrown at the bus, said Saiful Islam, supervisor of the bus.

In the capital, at least six crude bombs were blasted on Dhaka University campus at 10am but no one was injured.
