The police had assured him of tight security at the Ekushey Book Fair, slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy's father Ajay Roy has said.
He shared this information while addressing a mass gathering at the Aporajeyo Bangla of Dhaka University on Sunday morning. People from all walks of life gathered there to pay their last tribute to the writer-blogger who was hacked to death on Feb 26 at the TSC roundabout.
Ajay said: "I had informed senior officials of the police, including the inspector general, when Avijit received death threats.
"But, they [police] said nothing of that sort of incident [killing] would happen, as tight security would be ensured at the book fair."
"Then, how did this murder take place there?" he asked.
Ajay Roy also called upon the prime minister to bring the killers of his son to book, and ban all militant outfits.
Avijit and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonna arrived in Bangladesh on February 16 for the publication of two of his books at this year’s book fair.
He was hacked to death and his wife Bonna was seriously injured in an attack by unidentified assailants near the TSC roundabout on February 26.
Friends and family of Avijit Roy said the outspoken humanist had been receiving death threats since 2012.
Extremist blogger Farabi Shafiur Rahman is one militant with whom Avijit is known to have debated online.
His exchanges with Avijit resulted in death threats against the blogger.
