The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot and killed a cattle trader on Khalisha Kotal border in Fulbari upazila, Kurigram yesterday.
The victim, Shyamol Chandra, 35, was from Naodanga union in the upazila.
According to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local sources, BSF members of Boskotal camp in India shot at Shyamol around 5am, when he was smuggling cows near pillar 934 on the border.
Shyamol died on the spot and his body fell on the Bangladesh side of the zero line.
Subedar Abdul Motir, Shimulbari company commander of 45 BGB battalion stationed in Kurigram, confirmed the death and said: “We recovered the body around 10:30am and handed it over to Fulbari police. A formal protest has been sent to the BSF over the incident.”
Fulbari police OC Bajlur Rashid also confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune and added that the body was later sent to Kurigram Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
