48 dead as launch capsizes in Padma

At least 48 people have drowned as a launch with approximately 200 passengers capsized on the Paturia-Daulatdia route of the Padma River.

Deputy Assistant director Abdul Halim of Fire Service confirmed the deaths to the Dhaka Tribune.

Of the deceased, 15 were identified as Hanif, 25, of Kushtia, Sufia, 28, of Rajbari, Jewel, 24, of Rajbari, Firoz, 40, of Kushtia, Nabijan, 70, of Rajbari, Mudusudhan Saha, 60, of Kushtia, Salim Reza, 21, of Kushtia, Imran, 8, of Daulatpur, Nargis Akter, 11, of Faridpur, Rabia Khatun, 22, of Rajbari, Jalal Sheik, 35, of Faridpur, Fazlur Rahman, 25, of Rajbari, Joynal Sheikh, 32, of Bhandaria, Lata, 22, of Manikganj and Smriti, daughter of Faruk Hossain, hailed from Goalanda Adarsha village in Rajbari, the OC said.

15 more deceased were identified, said Akhtaruzzaman Masum, on duty official of the control room set up near the spot.

Of the identified bodies, 20 were handed over to their relatives, he added.

The other deceased could not be identified yet. But, the identification process is underway.

The death toll may rise further as the launch is now upturned, said a member of the rescue operation.

Launch MV Mostofa capsized around 11:50am on Sunday after it collided with a goods-laden tanker in the river.

On being informed, a police team went to the site, said the OC, adding members of the fire service are conducting salvage operation.

There were around 90-100 people on board, said Shibalaya circle ASP Harunur Rashid.

However, the exact number of missing passengers could not be ascertained yet.

Deputy Commissioner of Rajbari, Rafiqul Islam told Dhaka Tribune that MV Rustam, the rescue ship, started for the scene around 12pm, and is supposed to take 5-7 hours to reach the site.

However, the rescue operation was underway slowly.

The DC also said the district offices of both Manikganj and Rajbari have set up a control room at the riverside and have been working together.

They will coordinate to recover the bodies and hand them over to the families and look after their transports.
