The sudden spell of rainfall that was reported from across the country since the late hours of Wednesday – has come as a blessing for farmers who were ready to start irrigation for the Boro paddy on the fields.
Rainfall during this particular time of the year is a welcome break, as most farmers say the rain plays a vital role in providing a natural boost to the irrigation of winter crops such as Boro paddy, wheat and maize.
“The sudden rainfall has provided a natural boost to the crop field,” Masud Chowdhury, a farmer from Thakurgaon, commented about the rain that occurred on Wednesday – only seven days after the end of Magh.
“The rainfall also helped me save around Tk7,000, as I do not need additional efforts to irrigate my five-acre maize cropland,” he added.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorology Department, the rain was expected, as such rainfall usually takes place just before and after winter as part of the transition of seasons.
The sky would be clear by today in most parts of the country, the on-duty meteorologist of the Met Office added.
According to the Met office, Khulna division experienced the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Jessore district alone experiencing 51mm of rain as of 6am yesterday.
Although the farmers were happy in the rural regions of the country, residents of the urban areas suffered different obstacles as public transports were scarce and the roads muddy for the rain that took place throughout the night and also in the morning.
In the capital, the Met Office recorded only 6mm of rainfall as of 1pm yesterday.
