Two Jamaat-e-Islami activists have been killed in a gunfight with police at Begaritola of Manirampur upazila in Jessore.
The deceased are Abu Syed, 48, and Bojlur Rahman, 45.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Reshman Sharmin said police arrested Abu and Bojlur from Joypur village on Tuesday evening.
“On the basis of the information they provided, a police team conducted a drive to recover firearms at 3am on Wednesday. Sensing the presence of police, criminals hiding in the area attacked the law enforcers,” she said.
In retaliation, police fired back, which left Abu and Bojlur dead on the spot.
The ASP said their bodies were taken to Manirampur police station.
Meanwhile, police recovered nine hand bombs, 12 petrol bombs, a shutter gun and two rounds of ammunitions from the scene.
However, upazila BNP President Advocate Shahid Iqbal said the deceased were BNP activists.
