PM pitches Annisul Huq for Dhaka North mayoral race

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has proposed former FBCCI president Annisul Huq to run for mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election, on behalf of Awami League.

The PM made the suggestion at the regular cabinet meeting on Monday.

Two ministers who attended the meeting confirmed to Dhaka Tribune of Annisul's likely candidature, seeking anonymity.

“We have to make preparations to hold elections for both city corporation polls – Dhaka North and Dhaka South,” said LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam.

In 2011, the government split Dhaka City Corporation into DCC North and DCC South. Since then, an administrator was appointed for each new corporation to run its activities until a mayor is constituted through elections.

Sadeque Hossain Khoka was the last Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor, elected in 2002.

Khoka served his second term after completing a five-year tenure in May 2007.

Polls could not be held in 2007 due to a state of emergency and an incomplete voter list.
