7 dead in Barguna trawler capsize

Seven people have died after a trawler capsized on the Paira river in Barguna, with 200 passengers on board.

One was reportedly missing till the story was updated at 11pm.

The deceased are Yusuf, 55, Amir Ali, 50, Joynal, 55, Nayeem, 9, Safiz Uddin, 45, Ali Hossain, 25, and Harun, 35.

ASP Md Jahangir Alam endorsed the information to the Dhaka Tribune.

Rescued passengers of the trawler alleged the vessel capsized due to overloading.

Nishanbaria UP Chairman Dulal Forazi said: “The trawler capsized with 200 passengers on board in Tetulbaria at 12:30pm on Friday.”

The passengers were going to attend a locally organised Islamic congregation at Chalavanga Darbarsharif in the neighbourhood of nearby Patharghata upazila under Barguna district.

Locals first recovered Joynal's floating body. Later, coast guard members recovered six more bodies.

The district administration will give Tk5,000 each to the victims' families for burial.

Barguna Deputy Commissioner Md Jahirul Islam and Police Superintendent Md Saiful Islam visited the scene and supervised the rescue operation.
