Canada-Bangladesh joint venture hired as transaction consultants

The government has decided to appoint a joint venture of Canadian and Bangladeshi consultants to provide transaction advisory service for the construction of Laldia Bulk Terminal at Chittagong’s Patenga.

The Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase yesterday gave its nod to the Shipping Ministry proposal at its meeting, which was presided by Finance Minister AMA Muhith.

Following the meeting, Cabinet Division Joint Secretary Mustafizur Rahman told journalists that the committee gave its consent to use Tk14.53 crore to appoint the joint venture of Canada’s MMM Group Limited and Bangladesh’s Institute of Water Modelling and Maks Inc, as consultants for the project.

The Laldia Bulk Terminal would be set up under the public private partnership initiative, he added.

According to the proposal, two more joint venture firms also participated in the tender: a joint venture between PricewaterhouseCoopers and BMB Mott MacDonald, and a joint venture of Ernst & Young Pvt Ltd and Dev Consultants Limited.

Laldia Bulk Terminal is planned to be set up in a char near the mouth of the Karnaphuli river, 14km south of the Chittagong city.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase yesterday also approved a Home Ministry proposal for procuring heavy-duty water supply cars and other equipments worth Tk56.97 crore for setting up new fire service stations at 76 upazilas across the country. According to the proposal, the committee awarded the contract to Fon International, Mela, Manik Brothers,  Fujihan Power and Sudman Associates.
