Dhaka University correspondent of English daily New Age has filed a petition case against 13 officers of Ramna police following an assault on him by the policemen.
Nazmul Huda Suman, also a third-year student of DU Political Science department, filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Anwar Sadat's court.
Three police officers were named in the case. They are Ramna OC (operational in-charge) Moshiur Rahman, OC (investigation) Ali Hossain, and SI Mehedi Hasan Suman.
After recording the petitioner's statement, the court ordered a police officer equivalent to the position of a joint commissioner of DB to assign an officer equivalent to the position of an assistant commissioner to investigate the incident.
The court has asked the investigation officer to submit report within March 10.
The petitioner said on his way back to the university from the office around 5:30pm on Sunday, he saw policemen riding on a pillion which was recently banned by the government in the wake of recent spate of arson and crude bomb attacks.
He then tried to get a photo of them on his mobile phone, which one of the policemen noticed.
Immediately after that some 20 to 30 policemen led by SI Mehedi Hasan Suman of Ramna police swooped on him, although he told who he was.
The correspondent was beaten mercilessly by the baton on the spot. Then he was taken in the police car, where he was beaten again. And he was beaten once again in Ramna police station.
Later, his friends and colleagues rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
