The country’s energy regulator will conduct a hearing on bids to raise gas tariffs suggested by six state-owned gas distribution companies even though the firms have been profitable for several years running.
The hearings would continue until February 5.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) hear the proposals of Gas Transmission Company Limited today while Titas Gas and Pashchimanchal Gas Company Limited tomorrow.
Hearing on the proposals of Bakhrabad and Karnaphuli gas distribution companies will be held on February 4. On the concluding day, the BERC will conduct hearing on proposals of Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution System and Sundarban Gas Company.
The six firms submitted their proposals after the government had decided to increase gas prices.
As per the proposals, domestic users will have to pay Tk1,000 every month instead of Tk450 for each double burner, a 122.22% hike in the price. On the other hand, Tk850 has been proposed for single burners, which costs Tk400 at present. The proposed price is 112.5% higher than the existing figure.
The regulator was urged to make the tariffs effective from February 1.
