Fire burns down garment factory, hits residential building too

A devastating fire broke out at Kader Synthetic and Compact Spinning Mill at Konabari BSCIC industrial area in Gazipur city damaging its machineries, threads and clothes yesterday morning.

Firemen could not say how the fire had started.

They however assumed that it might have originated from an electric short circuit inside the AC panel room on the ground floor around 7:30am and then it engulfed the entire building.

Twelve firefighting units from Gazipur, Kaliakoir,Dhaka EPZ of Savar and Tongi rushed there and were able to douse the fire in six hours of frantic efforts.

The fire also spread to a nearby four-storey residential building, which workers and locals were able to control before it went out of control.

At least four people were injured while dousing the fire.

They were Didarul Alam, employee of Tongi fire service station, Abdur Razzak, security supervisor of the factory, and  Mohammed Iqbal Hossain and Abdul Khalek, who work for the factory. They were admitted to a local clinic.

Factory Security supervisor Swapan Bishwas however said no casulaties had taken place in the fire because the night shift workers had left office before it caught fire yesterday.

Quoting firemen, he said several cracks had developed due to the fire in the factory building.

Deputy Assistant Director of Gazipur Fire Service Akhtaruzzaman Liton said they were able to douse the blaze at around 2pm, adding that they could have doused it much before had they not faced any shortage of water.

Factory Manager (Administration ) Monirul Islam said all the factory goods, including  machinaries, clothes and threads, had been burnt down.

Soon after the fire broke out, all other nearby garment factories were declared closed for yesterday.

Probe committee formed

Deputy commissioner of Gazipur Mohammed Nurul Islam said they had formed a seven-member committee to look into this incident and the committee, led by Additional District Magistrate Mohammed Hossain, was asked to submit the report within seven working days.
