Diplomats’ 1971 memoirs launched

Bangladeshi diplomats faced four challenges during the 1971 Liberation War and performed their due duties with dedication, commitment and professionalism.

This observation came from Bangladesh Enterprise Institute President Farooq Sobhan while launching a book titled “Serving the Nation: Reflections of Bangladesh Diplomats” at a city hotel Saturday.

The book included the memories of a total of 43 Bangladeshi ambassadors who served over 100 countries.

Identity crisis, negative perception due to poverty and natural disaster and political instability about Bangladesh were the key challenges the diplomats faced during the birth of the country, Farooq said.

In the launching event, noted economist Rehman Sobhan, former foreign secretaries Faruk A Chowdhury and Mohammed Mohsin, and the Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam also spoke among others.

Rehman Sobhan said all expatriate Bangladeshis in 1971 were diplomats as they were not only protested the genocide of the Pakistani military but also collected money for the countrymen.

“The idea was when other diplomats were trying to get aid for Bangladesh, my task was to stop the Pakistan fund from the international communities,” he went on.
