Speakers at a human chain yesterday in the port city blamed the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir for the acts of sabotage in the name of blockade and demanded a ban on its politics.
The speakers under the banner “Bangladesh Rukhe Darao” flocked in front of Chittagong Press Club around 4pm protesting violence carried out on the ordinary people and public properties in the indefinite nationwide blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
They opined that the ongoing violence has turned into militant activities pushing the countrymen into an atmosphere of uncertainty.
Urging legal action such as capital punishment against the arsonists and vandals for the heinous attacks, local Udichi Vice-President Sunil Dhar said the political parties have been burning and killing people to realise their demands in the name of programmes.
Chittagong Gonojagoron Mancha Coordinator Sarif Chowhan said BNP and its alliance parties were burning innocent people and torching vehicles in a planned way from Teknaf to Tetulia in the name of democracy.
Former president of Chittagong Engineering Institute Delwar Hossain said Jamaat-Shibir men have been carrying out the petrol bomb attacks being failed to win during the 1971 Liberation War.
They urged upon the government to take immediate steps against the attackers for the sake of the humanity.
Recitation Artist Rashed Hasan presided over the event, where Poet and journalists Abul Momen, Kamrul Hasan Badol and Suvra Bishwash; Chittagong Press Club Joint Secretary Chowhdury Farid spoke among others.
