Tk1 lakh bounty for each assailant

The government has announced a bounty of Tk1 lakh for handing in criminals involved in subversive activities.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at a cabinet meeting.

He said: "Innocent people are being killed across the country by hurling petrol bombs, crude bombs in the name of political programmes. Vehicles are also being vandalised and torched.”

Amu said the government will pay out a bounty of Tk1 lakh to whoever helps in catching the miscreants.

This comes in the wake of violence during the BNP-led opposition alliance’s nonstop blockade across Bangladesh.

Wednesday was also the first day of a two-day nonstop general strike in Dhaka and Khulna divisions on top of the ongoing blockade.

Since January 5, Bangladesh has been gripped by violence, especially on moto vehicles, leaving dozens dead.

The State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal had mentioned the bounty on Tuesday but did not make any concrete announcement.
