Muhith: Tk 1, 2 going off market

Finance Minister ABM Muhith said the government is considering to cancel transaction of Tk one and Tk two for making smooth financial transaction by public.

The minister came up with the disclosure while talking to reporters after a separate meeting at Finance Ministry auditorium on raising the volume of the government currency denominators.

“The government has decided to have Tk five denominators from Bangladesh Bank onward which will be the lowest denominator in the country,” Muhith said.

The government will withdraw one and two taka paper money or metal gradually, he added.

The finance minister said it is yet to decide Tk five denominators may be paper money or only a coin.

Finance Secretary Mahbub Ahmed and Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman were also present at the meeting.

Finance minister also said the meeting decided to spend Tk300 crore for burning the existing five taka denominators which is a long procedure.

At present coins of Tk1, 2 and five exist in the country where Tk2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 exist as printed note.
