Arson kills 4 bus passengers in Rangpur

Four people, including a child, have been burned alive in an arson on a night coach in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district.

The deceased could not be identified immediately.

A total of 15 others were injured in the attack. Of the injured, some 11 received burn injuries.

Mithapukur OC Rabiul Alam said: “Pickets torched a Dhaka-bound night coach of Kholil Enterprise hailed from Kurigram as it reached Mithapukur around 1am on Wednesday.”

“The injured have been sent to different local hospitals,” he said.

The OC said police detained eight Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir members in connection with the attack.

Meanwhile, BNP’s associate bodies are observing a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in the district on Wednesday protesting the ‘confinement’ of the BNP chairperson and arrest of the party leaders and activists.

The alliance has been observing nationwide non-stop roads and waterways blockade in protest against Khaleda's 'confinement' since January 5.

The relaxed blockade is underway across the country amid sporadic incidents of violence, arsons, vandalism and arrests of BNP members.
