President Abdul Hamid has urged all to make the student politics people-centric and ideology-based for the greater interest of the nation.
The president also Chancellor of Dhaka University came up with the call while speaking at the 49th Convocation of the university, the highest seat of learning of the country, reports BSS.
"Student politics in the 60s was based on ideology and that ideology was to work for the welfare of the country and the people but today's student politics lacks such ideology to some extent that hurts me," Hamid said.
He said student politics must have ideology for the welfare of the masses.
Terming the graduates as higher human resources of the country, the president said, "Today's convocation is giving recognition of your achievement and on the other hand, it is bestowing responsibilities on you. These responsibilities are towards your family, society, above all towards the country and nation."
"Don't be frustrated in any inclement situation of the society, rather preserve courage," said the president pointing at the graduates.
"You have to build yourself as worthy citizens for your survival in this competitive world . . . you must be courageous and active in facing competitors in every area of knowledge-science," the President said.
He added you must remember this country and its contribution because your any negative activities can damage our vast achievements.
Recalling the glorious past of Dhaka University, President Hamid said this university nourished many renowned politicians who contributed a lot to the country's independence and national development.
"Dhaka University deserves praise for its effort to ensure time-befitting education and development of infrastructure . . . I believe this university would play positive role in successful implementation of the national education policy," said the president.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique and Pro-VC Academic Dr Nasrin Ahmad spoke at the convocation.
During the convocation, a total of 6161 students were conferred graduation, post graduation and PhD degrees.
A total of 37 students received gold medals for their outstanding results while 42 PhD, 20 M Phil and 49 MD-MS degrees were conferred in the convocation.
Professor Dr Francis Gurry, Director-General of World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), delivered convocation speech. He was also conferred Doctor of Laws in the convocation.
