Policemen, including a sub inspector, has been closed after they allegedly beat up journalists in Rajshahi yesterday during the countrywide blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20 party alliance.
The incident ensued around 10:30am on the premises of Rajshahi Government College that left a journalist injured. The injured journalist was Sohorab Hossain, staff reporter Jamuna Television in Rajshahi. He took treatment from a private clinic.
Sohorab said in the morning he along with his colleagues rushed to Rajshahi College after being informed that Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists brought out a procession in support of the blockade.
When the JCD activists fled completing the procession, police got angered and scorned the journalists present there as police failed to nab the JCD men, said Sohorab.
“When, we protested, sub inspector of Boalia Model police station SM Jahangir ordered policemen to charge baton on journalists that left Sohorab injured, said Rasel Mahmud, camera person of Jamuna TV.
Later, in protest at the incident, journalist called on the Rajshahi police commissioner Muhammad Shamsuddin and filed a written complaint to take action against the responsible policemen.
Police commissioner Shamsuddin ordered Sub-Inspector SM Jahangir and constable Bulbul who were involved in the attack on journalists, to be closed to police line at once.
Boalia police Office-in-Charge Nur Hossain Khandakar also expressed sorrow for the incident.
