Rizvi leaves hospital at midnight sans paying bill

BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has walked out of the hospital in Dhaka where he was apparently recovering from ill health.

The Apollo Hospitals reception confirmed that the BNP leader did indeed walk out of there past Tuesday midnight. The receptionist, however, requested anonymity.

The police did not confirm or deny their knowledge about the matter although Rizvi had been 'escorted' to the hospital by law enforcers four days ago.

The opposition politician was picked up from BNP headuarters in Naya Paltan, where he had been staying for several days to avert arrest. The police had said then, that they did not arrest Rizvi but were only escorting him to the hospital as he had taken ill.

However, there were no statements from the police authorities regarding this matter on Wednesday morning as news of Rizvi's exit from the hospital hit the headlines.

BNP chairperson's media wing official Shairul Kabir Khan said: "Rizvi is safe and fit now."

Rizvi's 'disappearance' took place hours after party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was arrested, as he stepped out of the National Press Club fresh from a press briefing having stayed there overnight, also to avert arrest.

However, an unknown person claiming him as the assosiate of Riavi paid the bill around 1:45pm, the Duty Managr of the hospital Avijit Roy confirmed.

BNP chief Khaleda Zia, meanwhile, spends her fourth day in confinement at her office in Gulshan amid countrywide protest and blockade.

Police authorities and ministers, including the prime minister, have categorically denied confining the opposition leader to her office although Khaleda Zia was barred from exiting her office as she wanted to join a party rally on Jan 5.
