Former chief justice Mustafa Kamal dies

Former Chief Justice Mostafa Kamal died at his Gulshan residence in the city early yesterday. He was 80.

Family sources said Mostafa Kamal died around 3am.

He was laid to eternal rest at the city’s Azimpur Graveyard following his second Namaz-e-Janaza on the compound of Gulshan Azad Mosque after Asr prayers.

Earlier, his first janaza was held on the Supreme Court premises at 2pm.

Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain, Dr Kamal Hossain, Barrister Rafiqu-ul Haque, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Barrister Amir-Ul Islam, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Supreme Court Bar Association president Khandker Mahbub Hossain, among others, attended the janaza.

The former chief justice left behind three daughters and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death. Mostafa Kamal, son of famous singer Abbas Uddin Ahmed, was born on December 30, 1934 at Cooch Behar, India. Mostafa Kamal, also a brother of famous singer Ferdousi Rahman and Mustafa Zaman Abbasi, served as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh from June to December in 1999.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of former Chief Justice Mustafa Kamal yesterday.

In a condolence message, the president recalled his contributions to the judicial service and said the nation has lost a great son of the soil at his death. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

The prime minister said a colourful chapter in the country’s judicial arena has come to an end at the death of Mustafa Kamal.

“He (Mustafa Kamal) was always very much vocal in establishing the rule of law in the country and keeping unharmed the independence of the judiciary,” she added. Sheikh Hasina also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her deep sympathy to his family members.
