Editor of a weekly with seven others sued under ICT Act

Eight people, including the Editor and Publisher of Weekly Banglabhumi Nazrul Islam Azhar, were sued for allegedly spreading false news using information technology.

CEO and founder of the web portal www.dearjulius.com, Julius Choudhury, filed the case under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act with the Joydebpur police station on Thursday night. This was the first case under the ICT Act in Gazipur since the act came into force.

Julius said: “Nazrul Islam posted false information about me on Facebook on December 24. Besides, he and seven others published the same false information on the website of Weekly Banglabhumi on December 17.”

“This has tarnished my image and posed a threat to my life,” he claimed.

The seven other accused are Syed Moksedul Alam Liton, chief editor of the weekly, Aminul Islam, managing editor, advisor Abdus Sattar Khan, news editor, special correspondent, staff reporter and web master of the Weekly Banglabhumi.

Joydebpur SI Ajay Chakrabarty acknowledged the case and said as per the ICT Act publishing fake information, which could harm an individual, using information technology could be considered as an offence.

Office-in-Charge of Joydebpur police station Khandkar Rezaul Karim Reza said the investigation of case was underway.
