Police have tried to search the office of English daily the New Age at Tejgaon area in the capital on Sunday night, without any warrant.
A brawl also took place between the New Age journalists and officials of Tejgaon police station at the newspaper office as police could not show a search warrant.
According to New Age reporters, nearly 30 police officials, led by Tejgaon OC Md Salahuddin, tried to enter the newsroom in the office without any kind prior notice or correspondence. As they tried to enter the office, the journalists along with New Age Deputy Editor Farid Ahmed stopped them and asked for their identities, as well as the search warrant.
However, the police officials misbehaved with the reporters and said they were not obliged to show a search warrant, the reporters claimed.
Later, they shot video footages inside the office and left the premises in nearly 20 minutes.
However, Tejgaon OC Md Salahuddin told the Dhaka Tribune that it was nothing but a misunderstanding.
“We received information that Jamaat Shibir activists were gathering in the area, which is why we went to raid the New Age office,” he said, claiming that when they tried to enter the premises, the newspaper reporters came out and started to talk heatedly.
