'AL councilor removes illegal structures for playground'

A local Awami League leader and councilor of ward 10 of the Barisal City Corporation has removed illegal structures from a school premises on Thursday following an order of the High Court.

Joynul Abedin was allegedly grabbed lands of playground of Bastuhara Government Primary School school premises for constructing his personal offices there.

After visiting the spot on Friday afternoon, it was found that personal office of councilor Joynul, his stalls and Sramik League office constructed illegally occupying the school premises and playground, have been removed.

Children were playing there after the removal of the illegal structures, reports this correspondent.

Joynul, the three-time elected councilor of the ward, said he did not know who constructed or removed the structures and yet to receive the High Court order.

“I will help to execute the High Court order as follower of law and dutiful local government representative,” Joynul who claimed to be staying at Dhaka told over mobile phone.

The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain ordered the authorities concerned to remove construction materials and clear the playground of a school for slum and street children in Barisal town within 48 hours.

The writ petition was filed by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The court also ordered the deputy commissioner and police commissioner of Barisal district and Sadar UNO to ensure restoration of the street children’s playing facility.
