Bangla Sign Language Day is being observed in the country today with due festivity.
Social Welfare Ministery, Jatiyo Protibondhi Unnayan Foundation and Society of the Deaf & Sign Language Users (SDSL) have arranged a number of programmes, including mass gatherings, discussion meetings and drawing competitions in the capital to mark the day.
Almost 3 million deaf people are living in Bangladesh. Bangla Sign Language is the first language of these people.
Instead of verbal communication, deaf people use sign language to express themselves and share their thoughts with others. The Bangla Sign Language user community is the largest community among the language based minority communities in Bangladesh.
The day has been observed nationally since 2013.
