Gayeswar on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court has granted three-day remand to BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeswar Chandra Roy in a case filed with Shahbagh police station for attempt to murder MP Chhabi Biswas.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Tosruzzaman granted the remand after police produced him before the court with a 10-day remand plea on Friday afternoon.

Three other BNP men were also placed on three-day remand in the same case. They are BNP's Turag thana unit convenor Atiqur Rahman, party activists Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Mizanur Rahman.

Gayeswar's counsel Advocate Sanaullah Mia filed a bail petition. However, the court rejected the petition and granted the remand for the BNP leader.

In the early hours of the day, the BNP leader was picked up by a team of Detective Police from his Siddheswari residence in Dhaka.

Later, he was shown arrested in the attempt to murder case.

Family members claimed that the DB police had also raided the BNP leader's Rayerbazar residence around 8:30pm on Thursday in order to capture him. Later, they raided Siddheswari house and detained him.

However, they could not provide any further information in this regard. The reason behind the detention also could not be ascertained yet.

Condemning the detention, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said: "The government is detaining the members of the opposition [BNP] in order to stay in power."

Two cases were filed against 150 leaders and activists of the BNP and its youth and student wings in connection with the clash.

Former Chhatra Dal president Azizul Bari Helal and incumbent President Rajib Ahsan have been named as accused in a case filed on the night of the incident.

BNP leaders and activists clashed with Chhatra League activists near Bakshibazar makeshift court ahead of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s appearance in the court in two corruption cases on Wednesday. At least 30 people including AL MP Chhabi Biswas were injured in the clash.

Miscreants also torched the lawmaker’s car parked in front of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
