Kangaroo court leads schoolgirl to suicide

A schoolgirl has committed suicide after Kangaroo court punished and assaulted her mentally at Shreepur Upazila in Gazipur on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased is Mousumi Akhter, 14, daughter of Mozaffar Hossain of Kodma village under Prohladpur union of the upazila.

The villagers alleged that the arbitrator wrongfully supported the accused Sujan Miah, 22, son of Asraf Ali of the neigbouring Vitapara village who abducted the girl on December 14. Sujan was also stalking the girl for long three years.

The girl was rescued by her aunt Masuda Begum from Sujan’s friend’s house on December 15.

Rahima Khatun, the neighbour of the deceased, alleged that the village arbitrators UP member Samsul Haque and Abdus Satter allegedly called the girl ‘prostitute’ and threatened the girl when she tried to speak up.

As a punishment, the UP member ordered the girl to squat by holding ears for 50 times.

She did it five times and ran to her room and hanged herself from the ceiling fan after closing the door, she added.

The villagers along with the arbitrators recovered the body and rushed to the hospital where the on duty doctor declared her dead.

The villagers alleged that the same arbitrators pardoned the accused in the previous arbitration that took place for stalking the victim.

After the girl suicide, the village arbitrators Abdus Satter and accused Sujon fled from the village.

Officer-in-Charge of Shreepur police station Mohsin Hossain said: “The deceased’s mother Nilufar Yasmin filed a murder case making Sujan main accused along with his sister Jesmin, aunt Monowara, UP member Samsul Haque, arbitrator Abdus Satter, Lal Mia and Sujan’s friend Ismail.”

Operations are underway to arrest the accused, he added.
