A local committee in Tagail today has called for a day-long hartal on next Wednesday and has vowed to evict the Kandapar brothel again.
Maulana Shamsuzzaman, vice-president of “the unsocial activities prevention committee,” also the imam of the Tangail Central mosque called on the hartal from a rally held after the Friday prayers where the members of the committee started gathering in front of the mosque. There they made a short rally.
After that they brought out a procession and tried to go towards the brothel through Nirala circle near Shahid Minar and Babystand . Seeing them progress towards the brothel the police prevent them from going there.
The gathering vowed that reestablishment of brothel will not be allowed.
Maulana Shmsuzzaman alleged that police had obstructed their peaceful procession, adding this would not stop their movement against the reestablishment of the brothel.
General secretary of the committee Maukana Abdul Aziz, Mufti Ershadul Islam and Mufti Elias Hakim were among others present in the rally. From the rally they vowed, they will not allow the reestablishment of the brothel till their last drop of the blood.
The committee, previously known as “Brothel Eviction Committee” in a press conference held Thursday at the Tangail press club called for a rally after the Friday prayer demanding the eviction of the brothel and opposed the rule of the high court of reestablishing the sex worker.
When asked about the order passed by the High Court, Shamsuzzaman cleverly responded with: “We respect the decision taken by the court. We will combat it within the legal framework.”
However, they did not mentioned where the sex workers would be rehabilitated or what would be their way of livelihood.
On December 9, the High Court bench of magistrates Kazi Rezaul Hoque and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman ordered safe return for the sex workers.
On behalf of the evicted sex workers, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association President Fawzia Karim Firoze submitted a writ petition.
