With the total number of Internet users growing to a record high of four crores, Bangladeshis are as “diligent” as ever in looking up sexual contents on the web.
Bangladesh has swiftly moved to the third position in the list of countries having searched for the word “sex” in the recent years.
Google recently disclosed the list based on its region-based annual search statistics which are available on its website.
Since 2011, Sri Lanka has consistently been ranked No 1 on the list, followed by India, Sril Lankan newspaper the Daily Financial Times reported.
Pakistan and Nepal are also among the top 10 countries on the list, showing that the list is heavily dominated by South Asian countries, which has been the case for the past few years.
Bangladesh is on the third position this year, moving up from the fifth and sixth positions in 2013 and 2012, respectively.
According to Google’s search statistics, sexual contents have been among the top 10 searches in the past two years among Bangladeshi users. Similar trend was noticed for image searches in the country.
However, the website traffic in the country is driven by news websites and blogs, rather than censored websites. Alexa Ratings shows that one-third of the most visited websites in the country are that of news media.
The top 10 countries where sex was commonly looked up on Google this year are: Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Pakistan and the Solomon Islands.
