HC shows green light to the sex workers’ return

Hundreds of sex workers who were evicted from the 200-year-old Kandapara brothel in Tangail town have started returning to their station following a High Court order.

Protesting their return, members of Osamajik Karjokolap Protirodh Committee (body to resist anti-social activities), who had evicted them, organised a meeting at the Tangail Central Mosuq yesterday.

They announced to bring out a procession in the town on Friday after Jum’a prayers, with a vow to prevent anti-social elements from entering the area.

They decided to carry out protests following legal procedure against the order of High Court that allowed the sex workers to return to the brothel.

On behalf of the evicted sex workers, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association President Fawzia Karim Firoze submitted a writ petition.

On December 9, the High Court bench of magistrates Kazi Rezaul Hoque and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman ordered the Home Ministry, LGRD Ministry, Tangail district commissioner, police super and Osamajik Karjokolap Protirodh Committee Chairman Maolana Abdul Aziz and General Secretary Maolana Abdul Jalil to ensure safe return of the sex workers.
