Shops, houses gutted in Chittagong

At least six shops and ten thatched houses have been gutted in separate fire incidents at Rangunia and Raozan upazilas in Chittagong.

However, no causality was reported in these connections, said fire brigade sources.

Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters in Agrabad sources said a fire broke out at Ranirhat Bazar area of Rangunia upazila at around 4am Wednesday.

The fire originated from an electric short circuit at one shop and soon engulfed the adjacent shops, burning down motor parts, furniture, three rod-cements’ shops and an auto-rickshaw garage.

Being informed, fire fighters with two units from Rangunia and Rangamati fire station rushed to the spot and doused the flame after one hour, the sources said.

The extant of losses caused by the fire would not be estimated immediately while the businessmen demanded the losses would be about Tk7 lakh.

In another fire, ten thatched houses were gutted by a fire at Khalifaghona area at Raozan upazila in the district.

Kalurghat Fire Service Station Officer Jasim Uddin said the fire broke out from the kitchen oven at one house in the area at around 12am and soon spread to the adjacent houses.

On information, fire fighters from Kalurghat fire station doused the flame after an hour of efforts, said the station officer.

The extant of losses caused by the fire would be Tk8 lakh.
