SC summons Prothom Alo editors

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has summoned Prothom Alo Editor Motiur Rahman and Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman Khan on allegation of contempt of court for publishing an article on appointment of chief justice.

The eight-member full bench headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain passed the order on Monday afternoon, after Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud brought the article to the court's attention in the morning.

Talks on with Sydney gunman

Australian police said on Monday negotiators had been in contact with the gunman holding hostages in a Sydney cafe siege but refused to speculate on his possible motivation.

Television footage earlier showed three of the hostages running from the building. New South Wales Deputy Police Commissioner Catherine Burn declined to say how many were still being held in the cafe but said it "is not as high as 30".

BCL activists lock CU entrance

The activists of ruling party's student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit of Chittagong University have put the main gate of the university under lock.

They also took position in front of the administrative building of the university around 12pm on Monday, demanding the punishment of their activist Taposh Sarkar's killars.

55 sued over arms recovery at CU

A case has been filed against 55 persons over the firearm and sharp weapons recovery at a dormitory of Chittagong University.

Md Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge of Hathazari police station told the Dhaka Tribune that SI Habibur Rahman filed the case around 12:30am on Monday.
