Probe body visits Sundarbans oil spill site

The investigation committee formed over the oil tanker capsize incident in Sundarbans, has visited the spot.

Members of the committee reached the oil spill site on Friday morning. They will investigate the reason of the capsize and effects of spraying oil neutraliser.

Specially-equipped vessel Kandari 10 will start spraying the oil neutraliser after acquiring the permission of the Environment Ministry, Mongla Port Authority Chairman Habibur Rahman said.

The sunken oil tanker was rescued from Sela River in the Sundarbans, 55 hours after it capsized with more than 350,000 litres of furnace oil.

A vessel with over 3,50,000 litres of furnace oil capsized in Sela River Tuesday morning. The oil spread along 20 kilometres of the Sela River seriously threatening the delicate ecology which is also home to the Royal Bengal Tiger.
