Four people died and at least 17 were injured in a freight train accident at Shimultoli Shahid Railgate area in Panchbibi upazila yesterday evening.
Of the four, three could be identified – Jewel, Sadequl and Ajahar Ali. The injured were taken to Joypurhat District Modern Hospital, but four of them were later shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
Witnesses said five to six bogies of the Parbatipur-bound freight train, which set off from Khulna carrying oil, got detached as it reached Khashbaguri area.
The driver stopped the train immediately after getting a call from the guard but the accident took place when the separated bogies moved and rammed into the engine.
