The government is planning to use chemical substances to preserve the density of Oxygen to the standard level in the areas affected by the oil spill on the river Shyalla in Sundarbans.
Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan endorsed the information in a press briefing on Wednesday.
He said: “A powder-like substance will be spread in the river in order to prevent the floating oil from going to the bottom of the riverbed.
The initiatives will breakdown the floating oil down under the water and the chances of destroying the Oxygen present in the water will no longer exist. "
Alongside, member of Chittagong Port authorities (harbor and marine) Commander M Shahjahan told the Dhaka Tribune that Kandari 10 left the port around 1pm.
He said it is carrying 10,000 liters of oil dispersant chemical for the Sundarbans which will be sprayed to breakdown the oil spill. The official said the ship would reach the spot by Thursday morning.
Three salvage vessels have already been sent to the Sundarbans where the fuel tanker Southern Star-7 capsized after allegedly being hit by another tanker, the minister added.
The minister said an order has been issued to arrest the owner of the vessel that hit the tanker.
A vessel with over 350,000 liters of furnace oil capsized in Shyalla River Tuesday morning. The oil spread along 20 kilometers of the Shyalla River seriously threatening the delicate ecology which is also home to the Royal Bengal Tiger.
The Shyalla River is known as a sanctuary for sweet-water Irawaddy and brackish-water Ganges dolphins, which are likely to be the first victims of the oil spill.
