Oil spill spreads in Sundarbans

The oil spill from a sunken tanker is spreading along the Sela River of the Sundarbans.

The oil slick is nearing Shoronkhola Range of Sundarbans, Mongla Coast Guard's Contingent Commander (West Zone) Captain Mehedi Masud said.

"We have sought a machine from Chittagong Port to remove the oil. It is on its way," Khulna Divisional Commissioner Abdus Samad said.

Besides, BIWTA has sent two vessels for hauling up the tanker. They were also on their way.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee was formed on Wednesday morning to investigate the oil tanker capsize.

Chandpai Range Assistant Conservator Belayet Hosssain has been made the chief of the committee which was formed on Wednesday afternoon.

A vessel with over 350,000 litres of furnace oil capsized in Sela River Tuesday morning. The oil spread along 20kms of the Shela River seriously threatening the delicate ecology which is also home to the Royal Bengal Tiger.

The Sela River is known as a sanctuary for sweet-water Irawaddy and brackish-water Ganges dolphins, which are likely to be the first victims of the oil spill.
