Woman who came back to life dies

The woman who showed signs of life after she had been declared dead died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.

DMCH authorities pronounced her dead around 4:30pm yesterday following some pathological tests, said DMCH Deputy Director Mushfiqur Rahman.

The identity of the 45-year-old woman, who had suddenly started moving her toes three hours after she had been “mistakenly” declared dead on Thursday afternoon, was still unknown.

Earlier in the morning, a four-member probe committee was formed to investigate how the “mistake” of declaring the woman dead took place. The committee headed by Dr Enamul Karim of the Medicine Department was asked to submit the probe report within three working days.

“Action will be taken against the doctor responsible on the basis of the probe report,” DMCH Director Brigadier General Mustafizur Rahman said yesterday.

Suffering from malnutrition and old age complications, the woman had been picked up from the street in a critical condition and brought to the hospital on December 2.

On Thursday afternoon, Dr Nilufa Nila, an honorary physician at the DMCH, declared her dead. A death certificate was also issued and a ward boy named Belal went to the morgue with the certificate.

When the morgue attendants came to pick up the body, the “deceased” woman started moving her feet.

According to the victim’s registration file, Brig Gen Mustafizur Rahman himself had referred her for admission.

The director told the Dhaka Tribune that he had noticed the woman lying on a footpath adjacent to the hospital gate when the hospital authorities were conducting a drive against illegal vendors and establishments. He asked his staff to get her admitted and take proper care of her.
