Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has informed the members of the parliament about the arrest of Abul Latif Siddique.
The speaker on Sunday afternoon said: “Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman sent a formal letter to the JS in this regard.”
This is the formal procedure that a magistrate does after arresting any member of the current parliament, she added.
Shirin said this in the last sitting of the fourth session of the parliament in this year.
On November 25, Latif Siddique was arrested after he had surrendered at Dhanmondi police station in the capital.
More than a dozen of cases were filed against Latif for his derogatory remarks of September 28 at a meeting in New York. On that day, he remarked on Hajj, Ijtema and the PM’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Following the remarks, he was sacked from the cabinet as ICT, post and telecom minister on October 12. His Presidium and primary membership in the ruling Awami League was also annulled soon after.
However, his parliamentary membership will be retained by him.
