‘Climbing in Chittagong needs patronage’

Despite Chittagong being a hilly region, mountaineering will not get popular unless climbers receive patronage here, said organisers of Chittagong’s first climbing club yesterday.

With the aim of popularising mountaineering among local youths, organisers of the club “Vertical Dreams” held a press conference at Chittagong Press Club.

Addressing the conference, President of the club Debashish said the club was formed considering the need of a platform for those who love to climb mountains.

He said: “After forming the club, I scaled Tharpu Chuli in the Nepali Himalaya range twice. It has an elevation of 5,7oo metres.

“Besides, three other members of the club climbed three peaks and they self-financed the journey.”

Debashis urged big corporations and others to extend financial support to mountaineering.

He pointed out that renowned companies abroad sponsor the sport and bring good repute for the countries they are based in, and said the same thing may happen here if big companies sponsor mountaineering.

Vertical Dreams began its journey on May 29 this year and currently has 30 members.
