BB governor receives Gusi Peace Prize International 2014

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman received Gusi Peace Prize International 2014 award yesterday at a ceremony held at the Philippines International Convention Centre in Manila.

He was awarded for his work in the field of economics focusing on the welfare of poor people, said a press release issued by the central bank.

The Gusi Peace Prize foundation termed him “the poor man’s economist” in the award citation.

In his reaction after receiving the award, the Bangladesh Bank governor said: “When I became governor six years ago, I said I would make the Bangladesh Bank a humanitarian central bank, and now I have succeeded.”

Atiur is the second Bangladeshi recipient of the award.

The first winner is AHM Nouman, founder and secretary general of the Development Organisation of the Rural Poor, who won the Gusi Peace Prize International award last year for his contribution in poverty alleviation and humanitarianism in Bangladesh.

The Gusi Peace Prize foundation, a charitable organisation registered in Manila, Philippines, introduced the peace award in the name of Javier Gusi who was guerilla who fought against Japan in World War II.
