549 foreigners in Bangladesh prisons

A total 549 foreign citizens are in prisons in Bangladesh till November 1 this year.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Monday told the parliament of this responding to a written question of lawmaker AKM Maidul Islam. 

Amir Hossain Amu, in absence of Asaduzzaman Khan, was answering to all the questions in the JS today.

Amu said the prisoners are mostly from India, Myanmar, Pakistan, Nepal, Peru, Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand and Sri Lanka.

He said: "Of them, 76 foreign nationals are convicts on charges of different criminals cases and the cases of 393 people remain under trial while rest of 80 foreigners are waiting for their return homes as they were released earlier."

 

He also said the Government had taken all necessary measures to bring back Noor Hossain, prime suspect of Narayanganj seven-murder case, to Bangladesh.

"Process to bring back Noor Hossain is underway," Amu told this in reply to a supplementary question of opposition lawmaker Peer Fazlur Rahman during the question and answer session in the House.
