Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman has been transferred to Dhaka as additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Additional DMP Commissioner Md Shamsuddin is set to assume the now vacant position at Rajshahi.
The Home Ministry issued the order on Monday, just two days after Shafiul Islam Lilon, a Rajshahi University academic, was hacked to death outside his home in Chauddapai, Rajshahi. The transfer was announced via the ministry's website. No reasons were stated for the transfer.
On Sunday, the university's registrar Entajul Haque filed a murder case accusing unidentified miscreants.
Police have so far arrested some 34 suspects in the case along with Humayun Ahmed, the principal of Islamia College.
A facebook group, named Ansar-al-Islam Bangladesh-2, opened few hours after the attack claimed responsibility for the killing of the sociology teacher.
The police could not confirm whether any militant group with the name existed, or were active, or whether it was a ploy to distract investigators from the real criminals.
The victim’s family has claimed that Islamist militants were behind the killing.
