Chittagong transport strike withdrawn

Bangladesh Road Transport Workers' Federation, Chittagong unit, has withdrawn its 24-hour transport strike after getting assurance from the administration to realise their five-point demands.

Mrinal Chowdhury, president of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers' Federation (East zone), confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the strike withdrawal.

“We have withdrawn our strike as police administration has assured us to take necessary steps to implement our demands and requested us to withdraw the strike immediately,” he said.

In this regard, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mondol along with other police officials held a meeting with the workers’ leaders around 1pm on Sunday.

Later, the leader of the workers’ federation sat an emergency meeting around 4:30pm and decided to withdraw the strike after 6pm, Mrinal said.

Earlier, the transport workers' federation called a 24-hour transport strike in greater Chittagong demanding realization of their five-point demands for Saturday.

Their five-point demands include ending BRTA and police harassment on the transport workers, construction of proposed inter-district terminals and issuing appointment letters to the transport workers.
