The students and teachers of Dhaka University (DU) and Rajshahi University (RU) have demonstrated for the punishment of the killers of RU Professor Shafiul Islam Lilon.
The teachers and students of Mass Communication and Journalism department of DU formed a human chain around 11am. Teachers and students of other departments also joined expressing solidarity.
They urged the authority to take necessary measures against the accused.
Akhtar Sultana, head of DU journalism department, said: “This kind of assassination cannot go on. The authority must ensure safety of the teachers.”
RU students and teachers also staged a rally in front of the central library on the university premises around 10am.
Management Professor Moloy Bhowmick said: “The Ansar al Islam Bangladesh 2 claimed that they killed Professor Shafiul. We demand immediate arrest of the accused.”
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League and Progotishil Chharta Jote have brought two seperate processions in Dhaka University area demanding the punishment of the killers.
Professor Shafiul Islam Lilon’s son is also a first-year journalism student at Dhaka University.
Professor Shafiul Islam was hacked to death outside his house in the Chauddapai area of Rajshahi city on Saturday.
Soon after Shafiul’s death, Rajshahi University Teachers’ Association announced a boycott of classes and exams for Sunday.
General secretary of the association Professor Pranab Kumar Pandey said the programme was announced to demand for swift justice.
