12 rescued while trafficking to India

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh rescued 12 people, including three women, while they were being trafficked to India through Putkhali border point in the district yesterday.
Shamsur Rahman, in-charge of Putkhali BGB-23 camp, said a team of the BGB, on a tip-off, conducted a drive in the area in the morning and arrested 12 people while they were being trafficked to India.
Quoting the arrestees, the BGB sources said the human traffickers were sending them to India with promise of lucrative jobs there.
However, the traffickers ran away from the spot sensing the presence of the BGB members.
Later, the rescued people were handed over to Benapole port police station.
A case was filed in this connection.
JSC examinee killed road crash in Barisal

A female candidate of the ongoing junior school certificate examination was killed in a road accident in Boidyapara area of Barisal town yesterday.
The victim was Nadira Aktar, 13, daughter of Mustafa Sharif of Karapur area in Barisal Sadar upazila.
Anwar Hossain, sub-inspector at Barisal Kotwali Police Station, the accident took place when a truck hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw, injuring Nadira critically around 8:45am.
Nadira, a JSC candidate from Sabera Khatun School, was going to attend her examination centre at Karapur School by the auto-rickshaw.
She was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
The body was sent to the medical college morgue for an autopsy.
Golam Rouf Khan, deputy commissioner (south) Barisal Metropolitan Police, said police detained the truck, but its driver managed to flee spot.
A case was filed with the police station.
Two youths shot

Two youths were injured in a gunfight with police in the district yesterday.
The victims were identified as Mizanur Rahman,27, and Hafizur Rahman,28, of Bahadurpur area.
SI Zahurul Haque of Kotwali police station said on a tip-off, police raided a poultry farm behind a school in the town while the miscreants were holding a secret meeting for committing robbery. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers the miscreants fired gunshots at them, triggering a gunfight that left the two injured with bullets.
The police recovered a firearm, bullets and few local weapons from the spot, SI said.
On the other hand, the relatives of the two alleged that the police took away the duo forcefully from home. Later, they could know about the story of shootout.
There was no any complain or case against them, they claimed.
Cop hurt in robbers attack

A police official was injured as robbers attacked him at Shibganj upazila of the district on Wednesday night.
The victim was identified as Altaf Hossain, sub-inspector of Gomastapur police station.
Gomastapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Firoz Ahmed said Altaf came under attack by a group of miscreants in Puskini area when he was on a regular patrol duty on a motorcycle on the Gomastapur-Choudala Road in the evening.
The hoodlums beat Altaf with iron rods and chopped him with sharp weapons, leaving him injured.
On information, police first took Altaf to Chapainawabganj Police Hospital and later shifted him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
